Project notes
Sited on the wooded ridge of Mt Bilin, the consulate is organised as three calm gestures: a heavy stone podium that holds the secure programme, a lifted timber lantern that houses the public reception hall, and a long reflecting pool that mediates between the building and the city below.
Materials are selected to weather slowly: New Zealand basalt at the base, a screen of vertical recycled timber from local kauri remnants, and a copper roof allowed to patinate. The compound is read from afar as a single horizontal line on the ridge, deliberately quiet against the dramatic landscape.
